Chelsea v Paris Saint Germain Betting Preview
Back Chelsea and PSG to end all square and the French side to progress
Chelsea will have confidence heading into this must-win Champions League tie, as their defeat to PSG in the first leg was their only defeat under Guus Hiddink so far. In domestic football, Chelsea have gone 16 games without defeat under the Dutchman, winning nine and drawing seven. They’ve also won three of their last four, and were close to making it four out of four until Stoke found a late equaliser at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The early season misery under Mourinho looks to have well and truly disappeared and we’re starting to see the Chelsea of old re-emerge.
Their goal-scoring form has certainly improved under Hiddink, with the Blues finding the net in all but two of their last 17 games. Recent emphatic victories over Manchester City and Newcastle United mean that Chelsea have scored 11 goals in their last three games at the Bridge, and they’ll need to find the net against PSG to stand any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite competition. They haven’t lost at home since December 5th, but they’ll need to find a win on Wednesday night.
Paris Saint Germain
Although it isn’t mathematically confirmed, PSG have all but wrapped up the Ligue 1 title. They currently sit top of the table on 74 points, 23 ahead of their nearest competitors Monaco in second, with nine games to go, and the French Champions will be looking to wrap up the league title in the coming weeks. Their European form has been equally impressive, with Laurent Blanc’s men losing just one of their seven Champions League ties so far.
Chelsea will be happy to hear that PSG have only won one of their last four in the league, and haven’t been hitting the same heights as they were during the first half of the season. However, Blanc’s men have won 14 of their last 17 away games in all competitions, and the Stamford Bridge faithful will be vary of the threat that the French team pose on their travels when they come to London in two days’ time. PSG have found the net 27 times in their last 12 games, and in that kind of goal-scoring form Chelsea will find it difficult to get the result they need on Wednesday – I’m backing a draw in this one.
The two sides have only met eight times in their history, playing out four draws and two wins each. This is the third time that they’ve met in the Champions League in the last three seasons, and the fourth time in total, with Chelsea progressing from two of those three previous meetings – they’ll be looking to make it three in four on Wednesday night. PSG have never won at Stamford Bridge, but a draw would be enough to see them through.
To score – Zlatan Ibrahimović 29/20
The Swede has scored 33 goals in all competitions and is enjoying yet another prolific campaign at the French club. He has three goals in the Champions League this season, including one against Chelsea in the first leg last month. He’ll be hoping to add to his tally on Wednesday night, and I would recommend backing him to do so at any time during the match with odds of 29/20.
Both teams to score – Yes 5/6
This has been the case in the last three meetings between the two sides. In all of Chelsea’s last seven games both sides have scored, showing both a weak defence yet a dangerous front line. PSG have scored in their last nine away games in all competitions, and it will be interesting to see two attacking heavyweights go head to head. I’m expecting at least one goal at either end, backing odds of 5/6 for both teams to score.
Match odds – Draw 12/5
PSG are priced as marginal favourites to win the tie, priced at 17/10, with the home side priced at 9/5 to take the victory and stand a chance of progressing to the next round. However, I would recommend backing the draw with both sides in good form as of late, and you can pick up odds of 12/5 for the sides to share the spoils on Wednesday night.
Writer’s prediction: Chelsea 1 – 1 PSG (PSG win 3-2 on aggregate)
