Manchester City v Wigan Betting Preview 11/05/2013
This Saturday sees Premier League champions Manchester City take on Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup final.
Manchester City will be looking to replicate their 2011 FA Cup final win and secure their six FA Cup honour against the Latics this Saturday. City have the experience of winning crucial games in the last few years; winning the FA Cup final in 2011, the Community Shield in 2012 and vitally, winning the Premier League title last year on the final day of the season. Wigan, on the other hand, have very little experience in these kind of situations. As aforementioned, this is Wigan’s first FA Cup final appearance in their history. But having said that, Wigan did appear in the League Cup final not so long ago. Wigan played Manchester United in the League Cup final in 2006, a match they eventually lost 4-0.
Many people will be expecting a similar result with City placed up as strong 4/11 favourites to win in 90 minutes, with Wigan underdogs at 8/1.
Due to their FA Cup final appearances both of these teams played their Premier League matches on Tuesday. Manchester City were able to rest some of their key players, including Silva and Aguero in their 1-0 win against WBA after almost certainly having secured second place in the league. Wigan on the other hand played a full-strength team against Swansea; a game of vital importance and a must-win for Wigan. Unfortunately for the Latics they were pegged back from leading positions twice and eventually lost the match 3-2.
Manchester City have a very strong record against Wigan in recent years and have won their last 7 meetings home and away. In fact, Wigan have not managed to score a goal against City in any of those 7 matches. However, this is the FA Cup final and anything is possible. Wigan have been in fantastic form in this competition and have had to face a much harder run in that Man City. City have been comprehensive in most of their wins so far, but have only faced three Championship teams and struggling Stoke City in the progress. Whereas Wigan have battled their way through with impressive wins away at Huddersfield and Everton.
After a somewhat poor season by his standards, Sergio Aguero has been improving as of late. The Argentinian striker has been in fine scoring form, netting winning goals against Manchester United and Chelsea in recent weeks. He is certainly a player that can change a game or provide the vital piece of brilliance to win one. If he is on form on Saturday then it is hard to see any other result than a City. If you agree, you can back him to score anytime at 8/11 and if you’re really brave, to score a hat-trick at 16/1
Experience, form, statistics and nearly every other indicator is pointing to a Manchester City win here. The Premier League champions come into the match at strong 4/11 favourites, but despite their short-looking price, do they still offer value? Manchester City will be ready for this game and will be raring to win some silver-wear this season after losing out on the Premier League to Manchester United. This is the only competitive natured competition City are left in and will surely be leaving nothing in the changing rooms. Wigan on the other hand may have other issues on their mind; after the 3-2 loss to Swansea in the week Wigan may be coming into this game disheartened about their possible relegation and maybe focusing on their remaining Premier League games instead. But, that is difficult to say and only the players know that.
In terms of finding some betting propositions for this match it may be advisable to look for first goal scorer/correct score bets as the FA Cup final can throw out some surprise results and at least at better value you will get more for your money. As mentioned above, Aguero is certainly going to be an important player and at 3/1 he does represent good value to score first in the match. The Argentinian forward has been in fine form of late and is bound to cause a lacklustre Wigan defence problems.
BEST BET: Sergio Aguero to score first @ 3/1
VALUE BET: Manchester City to win 4-0 @ 11/1
