Paddy Power Gold Cup betting Preview
This week Cheltenham hosts one of the best handicaps of the year with the Paddy Power Gold Cup. Run over two miles four and a half furlongs of Cheltenham’s Old Course the Paddy Power is one of the best handicaps of the early season. Whilst it might be risky to back before official declarations come out, I do believe there is value to be had.
Two horses who currently represent value at their prices are Present View and Generous Ransom. Present View is 20/1 with Paddy Power, who are offering five places for each way bets. Generous Ransom is 16/1 again with Paddy Power.
Both horses fit the main trends of recent winners. Firstly, 6 of the last 9 winners have a previous course win to their name. Secondly, 7 of the last 8 winners have carried under eleven stone in weight. And finally 5 of the last 8 winners have been aged seven years old.
Present View goes into this year’s race after two prep runs. Firstly he reappeared from an injury at Chepstow and ran a perfectly respectable forth. He then ran at Ascot in a valuable three mile handicap. This run was disappointing and he was eventually pulled up. He will need to overcome this poor run but his trainer, Jamie Snowden, reported he is in prime physical shape for Saturday’s race. This will be reassuring for potential backers as he was ruled out for some of last year with injury. Present View fits the bill as a potential victor on Saturday because he is a previous Cheltenham winner, with a victory at the 2014 Cheltenham Festival. He is set to carry a weight of 10-10 which should be perfect when looking at the weights of recent winners.
The second horse that ticks all the right boxes is Generous Ransom. He is due to carry only 10-7 in Saturday’s race which seems to be a very fair mark. He recorded his course victory in January of this year when winning on Festival Trials Day. He went on to run a very good third at the Cheltenham Festival in a very competitive handicap. Generous Ransom had a run over hurdles in October which should have set him up perfectly for Saturday.
Saturday’s race looks to be an open renewal but these two horses are selected to go close and give punters good value. Click here to get all the latest odds for this race, as well as the best free bets from reputable online betting sites.
