Celtic v Manchester City Betting Preview
Back Manchester City to maintain their 100% winning start with a victory over the Scottish champions
Celtic’s Champions League campaign got off to the worst possible start as they fell to a 7-0 defeat to Barcelona at the Camp Nou two weeks ago. After scraping through qualification 5-4 on aggregate, Brendan Rodgers’ men failed to give their supporters any real confidence of a successful European campaign. However, Celtic’s domestic form has been far more impressive, with the Hoops currently sitting top of the Scottish Premiership table after five wins and a draw from their opening six fixtures.
They’ve scored 26 goals in those meetings, including six in their last outing against Kilmarnock on Saturday, and they remain unbeaten at Celtic Park in all competitions so far this season. Despite only conceding three goals in their last four at home, Celtic have failed to keep a clean sheet in nine of their last ten in all competitions, and with an attack such as Manchester City’s in town on Wednesday night it looks almost certain that Celtic will concede. I think City will be far too strong for Rodgers’ side, and I have very little hope of a Celtic victory.
If Celtic’s domestic form has been good, Manchester City’s has been superb – perfect in fact. Pep Guardiola’s side are top of the Premier League after winning all of their opening six games, scoring 18 goals in the process. Their 3-1 win over Swansea City on Saturday made it two wins in a week over the Swans, after knocking them out of the League Cup midweek.
Guardiola has seen his side win all ten of their competitive matches under his management, and although their defensive form has been far from sound, their attacking displays have been outstanding, and unfortunately for Celtic, Barcelona-esque. City won their Champions League opener 4-0 when they hosted Borussia Monchengladbach two weeks ago, and after securing a 6-0 aggregate win over Steaua Bucharest during qualification, City have now scored ten goals in just three European matches so far this season. I can’t see any other result than a Manchester City win on Wednesday night judging by their recent form.
The two sides have never met in a competitive match – the only meeting came back in 2009 when City won a friendly 2-1. Both sides currently top their respective divisions, but what we’ve seen from Guardiola’s City side so far suggests they will be very tough to beat.
To score – Sergio Aguero 4/9
Sergio Aguero has hit the ground running this season, and after two goals against Swansea City on Saturday the Argentine striker has now scored 11 goals in just six games. With just 524 minutes of football under his belt, that puts City’s all-time Premier League top scorer on a goal every 48 minutes, so don’t be surprised to see him add to his tally on Wednesday night. You can back odds of 4/9 for Aguero to net at any time.
Both teams to score in 90 minutes – Yes 4/5
Despite making it all the way to the semi-finals, Manchester City conceded in all six of their Champions League away games last season. Celtic will therefore head into this encounter with confidence, which will be boosted by the fact that they’ve found the net in all of their last 13 competitive matches at Celtic Park. However, City have scored in 11 of their last 12 away from home, and with 41 league goals between them so far this season it looks likely that both sides will find the net on Wednesday evening, with odds of 4/5.
Match odds – Manchester City 1/3
City will miss the influence of Kevin de Bruyne, who misses the game through injury, so it’s unlikely we’ll see a perfect Manchester City display, but key players such as top goalscorer Sergio Aguero and also Raheem Sterling, who has four goals and six assists in only eight appearances this season, are available and should help Pep Guardiola’s side ease to victory. The away side are priced at 1/3 to win this one, with Celtic priced very much as outsiders at 17/2. Odds for a draw, which would be a superb result for Brendan Rodgers’ men, are 19/4.
Writer’s prediction: Celtic 1 – 3 Manchester City
